The Knights of Columbus was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in 1882 in New Haven, Connecticut. It was named in honor of the mariner Christopher Columbus. Originally serving as a mutual benefit society to low-income immigrant Catholics, it developed into a fraternal benefit society dedicated to providing charitable services, promoting Catholic education and actively defending Catholicism in various nations. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled, and needy members and their families. The social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief, and public relief works. Today, it is the world's largest lay Catholic family service with over 1.9 million members.
Strong Right Arm of the Catholic Church
The Knights of Columbus Catholic Men’s organization is considered to be a strong right arm of the Catholic Church and is dedicated to upholding Catholic beliefs and morals, along with charity and service as the bulwarks of the order. For their support for the Church and local communities, as well as for their philanthropic efforts, Pope John Paul II referred to the Order as a “strong right arm of the Church.” Through charity and the examples of their lives, the Knights stand in service to all as witnesses to the Good News of the Gospel.
