Eucharistic Ministers prayerfully serve the people of OLMM by distributing the Body and Blood of Christ during Eucharistic celebrations.
Eucharistic Minister
A Eucharistic Minister is a parishioner, selected by the Pastor, who serves, distributes, and administers the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ during the Holy Communion. In the Catholic Mass, they are referred to more accurately as “Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion” (the “ordinary” minister being the priest celebrant). Eucharistic Ministers make the communion rite take place in a timely fashion.
Eucharistic Ministers are called not only to minister the Body and Blood of Christ, but to have and maintain a strong faith, a sense of awe, and an inclusiveness of others as the foundation for their ministry. The ministers accomplish this by strengthening their faith from within and sharing it with the faithful at communion time. Eucharistic Ministers must be comfortable in establishing a relationship with each communicant in what is most likely the most intimate moment in the liturgy.
Blessing during Communion
Those who choose not to receive the Eucharist are welcomed with a blessing. Blessings during the communion line have become a custom, but in this context, the Church really only gives the authority to offer blessings to ordained ministers. Therefore if someone comes forward to a Eucharistic Minister with their arms crossed (a child or adult), the Eucharistic ministers would say: “May Jesus be in your heart”, or “Jesus loves you.”
